Skill or Spark?

The Key to making a Lasting Impact on your clients

If your Instagram algorithm has figured out you’re a fitness junkie, you’re probably getting served an endless stream of videos from today’s biggest FitPro stars. These coaches radiate confidence on the mic, crack jokes effortlessly, and seem completely at ease leading a room. At first glance, it might seem like personality is what’s most valued in the industry.

But I would argue the opposite.

Why Content Still Matters

The truth is, even the most confident coaches you see on your feed didn’t build their reputation on charisma alone. Behind that magnetic energy is a rock-solid foundation of expertise, preparation, and scientifically supported programming. You can’t fake confidence—not for long, anyway.

If a coach doesn’t fully believe in their class plan, hasn’t prepared thoroughly, or doesn’t understand the why behind the movements, it shows. Maybe they gloss over key technique points, stumble through their cues, or focus more on cracking jokes than coaching effectively. The result? Clients leave feeling uninspired, or worse, confused.

Confidence Comes from Preparation

The most engaging coaches aren’t winging it, they’ve put in the work to create thoughtful, well-rounded programs that they know like the back of their hand. This allows them to:

  • Deliver impactful cues: With a deep understanding of the exercises, they can coach in real-time, offering modifications and progressions that feel seamless.

  • Focus on the room: Instead of second-guessing the plan, they can channel their energy into reading the vibe and connecting with clients.

  • Be authentically themselves: Confidence breeds authenticity. When you trust your own expertise, you’re free to let your personality shine.

A Strong Foundation Enhances Personality

No one is saying you shouldn’t bring energy or personality into the room! Clients love a coach who can make them laugh, hype them up, or help them forget how many burpees they just did. But that personality should enhance a well-structured class, not mask a lack of preparation.

When you’ve done the hard work behind the scenes, you can show up and lead with ease, letting your unique personality elevate the experience instead of carry it.

How to Balance the Two

  1. Invest in Your Education: Whether it’s certifications, workshops, or independent research, make continuous learning a priority. The fitness industry evolves quickly, and staying informed sets you apart.

  2. Practice, Practice, Practice: Before you hit the mic, rehearse your class plan. Know your cues, transitions, and flow so well that they feel second nature.

  3. Seek Feedback: Ask trusted peers or clients for honest feedback on both your technical coaching and your energy. What’s working? What could be improved?

  4. Refine Your Class Plans: Take time to review your programming regularly. Is it aligned with your client’s goals? Are the progressions and regressions clear?

The Bottom Line

Charisma may get clients in the door, but expertise keeps them coming back. When you pair technical excellence with authentic energy, you become unstoppable—not just a coach with a great vibe, but a leader who inspires trust, delivers results, and stands out in today’s competitive market.
